Bank officials had found the top half of the ATM broken and the screen and numeric pad damaged. The thieves had tried to prise open the machine but abandoned the operation after failing to reach to the cash box.
KK Patel, inspector of the Sardarnagar police station, told TOI that the thieves had smashed the surveillance camera in the kiosk but the footage showing the trio entering the kiosk was retrieved. "Working on the basis of the footage, we zeroed in on some of the local petty criminals and found the match in Sunil Jadav alias Sabu, 25, a resident of K Ward, Kubernagar," Patel said. "Jadav had been caught earlier for theft and pickpocketing. He confessed that he wanted money to buy drugs and thus decided to break the ATM."
However, Jadav did not know how the machine functioned and thus in desperation damaged the screen and keypad. Police said that they suspect the two accompanying him to be minors. Investigators added that so far they have not found evidence of Jadav being involved in other attempts to break ATMs.
